This week, I wanted to share something pretty cool that we’re doing here on londonthelocal.com. I myself am pretty excited and think that all of you will be too! Our site is now partnering with Noah’s Animal House, a non-profit that began here in Las Vegas back in October of 2007. Their mission: to remove “No Pets Allowed” policies at domestic violence shelters throughout the United States.
Did you know that over 25% of battered women have delayed leaving their abuser because they didn’t have an escape plan that could include their pet? Every 15 seconds a woman is battered by her partner in the US and many of these women do not have the financial resources and emotional support to leave. In many cases, some women feel like they can’t leave because of their family pet and they don’t want to leave them behind. Many abusers often threaten to harm or kill the family pet when a victim attempts to flee. In a national survey, 85% of women seeking safety in a domestic violence shelter report pet abuse in their home.
When Noah’s Animal House opened their doors in 2007, they were the only pet facility next to a domestic violence shelter in the United States. Noah’s Animal House has served over 1,405 pets for over 92,000 boarding nights in their first 10 years. Currently, only 3% of the domestic violence shelters in the US offer pet services, even though 71% of pet owning women entering domestic violence shelters reported their abuser injured, killed or threatened their family pet.
Noah’s Animal House is 100% funded by private donations and grants from the community and is the first of its kind in the western United States. Las Vegas was one of the first cities in the country to address this important barrier facing victims of domestic violence. Thanks to the support and donations of the community, Noah’s Animal House opened their second location, Noah’s Reno, on February 8, 2018. By expanding to Reno, Noah’s Animal House is the first pet component for domestic violence shelters to become statewide in the United States.
A few weeks ago, Noah’s Animal House invited me to join their booth during their Fund Raiser hosted at the Vegas 51s vs. the El Paso Chihuahua’s game at Cashman Field! It was here that we learned all about their non-profit and amazing mission. Not only was the event a pup-riffic time, but it also made dad and I want to get involved with the charity. For this reason, we have pledged to do our part! When you shop on our site, you will have the option to round-up for charity and donate to Noah’s Animal House!
